South Africans acquiring foreign citizenship without prior Ministerial permission risk losing their SA citizenship, regardless of birth status or reasons for dual citizenship. This applies to everyone over 18, except minors and those acquiring citizenship through marriage. Apply for retention of SA citizenship before acquiring another. Losing citizenship requires reinstatement applications (if by birth/descent, must reside in SA) or reapplication for permanent residence (if by naturalization).
